Tech Tech Tech.. The most talked about and ‘in thing’ these days. No matter where we are and whom we are talking to these days. The topic that comes up most often (if not every time) is with regards to the latest smartphone in the marketplace or the latest app released or the launch of high end mac-book pro or the new game console. You get the point!! This pretty much explains how much technology dominates our life today.
Here’s the most interesting aspect. This conversation is not just restricted to certain age group or a certain community but everyone. In fact, Gen Z (Born post 2000) these days have more knowledge about tech than Gen X and one could argue ‘Gen Y ‘as well.
Gen Z tech savvy kids will never experience what life was back in the day, where there existed phones which were precisely used to make calls or store contacts or where meeting people in person or calling them was considered as a standard compared to ‘whatsapping’ or ‘facebooking’ (the modern day terminology).
For the Gen X & Y this would come off as a massive change in the last decade or so.
While the technology has given us a lot of improvements (in various aspects), it has also had a direct impact on the amount of time we spend outside our luxurious homes. With everything easily done from the comfort of home be it shopping, getting in touch with people or even to grabbing a meal, we have sort of restricted ourselves to walk outside and get things done.
One of the things that amazes me personally in the modern day is the great dependency on our smartphones. Now, I won’t deny, I am overly dependent on my smartphone too. For the simple reasons, it pretty much does everything that a computer was once reliant upon.
Be it chatting with our friends, watching videos, checking social media, sending emails, managing our schedules etc etc. As if the above wasn’t good enough, the smartphone makers went an extra mile in making sure that the cameras in our phones were good if not better enough to replace our high tech digital cameras; thereby killing the market for digital cameras.
Indeed, a smartphone these days is ‘one device’ capable of taking care of all our needs and hence it comes of a no surprise to any of us that we spend most of our times with our smartphones than our loved ones.- You all know what I’m referring to, something that we have all been guilty at one point in time. 🙂
Thanks to technology, there has been a major shift or a change in terms of the way we perform daily activities. For example, the way we communicate (the one which we all know), the way we read (modern day kindle or ipad as compared to traditional books), the way we showcase our lifestyle (sending pictures or informing through a call vs status updates on facebook and twitter), the way we shop as consumers (offline vs online shopping), the way we do business or network (traditional one on one connections through meeting vs online global reach through Linkedin, Facebook, Instagram etc.), the way we learn (thanks to e-learning educational programs online) and of course the way we date (with the rise of dating websites and apps growing ever than before).
The rise of internet and social media has also allowed us to voice our opinion and be expressive with regards to how we feel or what we believe about something or someone. One is not confined to immediate family or community when expressing something or someone he/she feels strongly about. This in turn, has made businesses, celebs and other individuals cautious before undertaking any action for it could severely injure their reputation.
Technology has definitely helped us advance in a lot more ways we could ever imagine and you bet its impact on our lives will only continue to grow, as we are already looking at ‘driverless cars’, ‘super fast jets’ ‘& Brain- Computer interface’ (to name a few) ahead of us.
While everything has its pluses and minuses, the same is with technology. If used well with the right purpose and direction, it can be heavily advantageous to all of us. However, there are times we need to switch off and resort to some of the natural ways of doing things like – reading a ‘book’, spending time outdoors enjoying our favorite sport, one on one meets with family and friends etc.
Do share your experiences as to how ‘tech’ has impacted your life.
